A poem by Rumi This world of two gardens, and both so beautiful. as water goes bowing down itself to the ocean. about to let go. There’s no avoiding pain, But also we have a green-winged longing These forms are evidence of what to go into that: rain that’s been leaking The bent bowstring straining at our throats Mice quivering in fear of the housecat suddenly So let’s begin the journey home, into an empty mirror that passionately wants Now let silence speak, and as that (from a translation by John Moyne) |

One of the best things about having this blog is hearing back from the artists who generate the best musecrack. I got a comment this week from Seth Hughes, the man who took this photograph. It made my week: I was riding in the back of a jeep… I couldn’t believe my eyes when the tiger leaped out of the brush and swiped at the two men. I wish that I had shots of the actual attack. Unfortunately, there was no way of anticipating the moment. Tigers are, after all, masters at the element of surprise. |

| 70 year-old Buddhist monk Hua Chi has been praying in the same spot at his temple in Tongren, China for over 20 years. His footprints, which are up to 1.2 inches deep in some areas, are the result of performing his prayers up to 3000 times a day. Now that he is 70, he says that he has greatly reduced his quantity of prayers to 1,000 times each day. |
